Ever asked Microsoft Copilot a question and got a completely wrong answer โ€” then asked ChatGPT the exact same thing and got it right?

Both tools run on world-class AI. The intelligence isn’t the problem.

So why does one give you a better answer?

Here’s what’s actually going on.

Copilot is connected to your corporate data โ€” emails, SharePoint, Teams, file shares. ChatGPT knows nothing about your company. You’d think having MORE context would make the answer better.

It doesn’t. Not when that context is polluted.

Your corporate environment is likely drowning in what we call ROT data:
๐Ÿ”ด Redundant โ€” duplicated files and copies of copies
๐ŸŸก Obsolete โ€” outdated docs nobody updated since 2019
๐ŸŸ  Trivial โ€” noise that adds zero business value

When Copilot searches your network, it doesn’t just find the good stuff. It surfaces all of it. That ROT data floods the AI’s context window, crowding out accurate, current information.

There are other factors too โ€” how your content is indexed, who has access to what. But ROT data is the one most organizations can actually identify, measure, and fix systematically.

ChatGPT wins not because it’s smarter โ€” but because it isn’t poisoned by your history.

To be clear: Copilot is a powerful tool. When it’s connected to clean, well-governed data, it’s exceptional. The problem isn’t Microsoft’s AI. The problem is what we’re feeding it.

This is the AI problem nobody is talking about enough.

Over the next few weeks I’ll break down:
โ†’ What ROT data really is
โ†’ Why cleaning it saves real money โ€” in more places than you think
โ†’ Why it’s now a compliance and security liability
โ†’ What you can actually do about it

Follow along if you’re responsible for AI readiness, data governance, or just want Copilot to actually work.
